Frenald Pond
I stopped to photograph maple flowers growing on tree short enough to reach, but who could resist this clean sheet of reflective water. I would normally never but the horizon across the middle of the shot, but it works here somehow, with the bit of framing provided by the branch at the top and the strong reflections. Or so I think. I got down low to the water with the flip out LCD for the shot.
Canon SX20IS at 28mm equivalent. F4.0 @ 1/800th @ ISO 80. Landscape program.
Recovery for the sky in Lightroom. Added Clarity and a bit of Vibrance. Blackpoint to the right. Sharpen Landscape preset.

Sky Hy, Topsam ME
Happy Sunday!
And for Sunday, an image from this weekend’s Men’s Retreat at Sky Hy Conference Center in Topsham Maine. Formerly a ski lodge with a tow-rope slope, Sky Hy is situated in a range of what are, by any standard that includes the Rockies, medium high hills about 20 miles inland from the ocean. This shot was from the third floor balcony. The hill drops away to Bradley Pond, here seen under another amazing Maine spring sky. As you see, the maples in the valley are not leafed out yet, but a close look will show the red tinge of the flowers. Just before this shot was taken we saw a Golden Eagle soaring over the pond. 🙂

A Little Pink on Your Blues
The first shot to make Pic of the Day from my new camera. I only had a few moments of daylight after work and I am in Virginia. Frustrating. But still…
What works for me here are the subtle colors and the pattern of detail from the reeds and grasses.

Least Grebe, Estero Llano Grande SP, TX
Taking a break from Germany today. Here is a Least Grebe from Estero Llano Grande SP in Weslaco TX. Shot with the Zeiss PhotoScope 85FL. I was actually chasing a Ringed Kingfisher up and down Alligator Lake…he was on the far side so it was not really a chase, but he did seem aware of me…almost as though he was playing with me. If I put my tripod down, he moved. I never did get a picture of him. However, at one of his perches, this little (Least actually) Grebe was swimming in close on occasion, and I did get him. Oh yes. I got him.
The PhotoScope reaches out to 45x, giving it the field of view of an 1800mm lens. This shot was taken at about 1600mm equivalent for a nice portrait without getting my feet wet.
The bird was actively feeding, above water for only 30 seconds at at time. You can see the water beads on his back.

Very little processing in Lightroom. Much less added Clarity and Vibrance than I would use on a scenic, and just the Sharpen Landscape preset.

Pond, Swan, Fall
We seem to be getting a lot of these moody fall days. I manage at least two falls each year. One in Maine, one in New Jersey, and one in New Mexico: mid-October, late-October, and mid-November. This year I will be in Germany in mid-November. I am not sure if that is fall there or not. We shall see.
This is a little pond on the back side of Lighthouse State Park in Cape May, New Jersey. I have never seen as may Mute Swans as there are this year. They are everywhere there is fresh water. A touch of fall in the foliage on the far side and the cat-tails in the foreground give the image some depth.

Back to the Fall in Maine
From my photo-jaunt out to my favorite fall spot, along the Mousam River in West Kennebunk, a few miles from home. Still that same moody day. Trying for extreme depth on this one.

Mousam Pond: Moody Fall
Just down river from the falls (yesterday) there is a dam that backs up this pond (by Maine standards…perhaps a lake elsewhere). I also have many, many images taken from this spot. This is by far the moodiest. The light makes the foreground almost as prominent as the foliage. I like the subtly of the reflected clouds and the few floating leaves.

Sailing at Lakeside
The season is over at Lakeside, and the little boats idle, the dock empty, under a big Lake Erie sky. This is about shape and color: one of several attempts at this row of boats, with the clouds massed on the horizon as background.

View from Marblehead Light
Lake Erie was showing a good chop on my visit to Marblehead. Truly grey water. Massive clouds. Stick a little bit of tree in one corner for scale, and you have an interesting (imho) lakescape.

Marblehead Light, OH
Sometimes there is no choice but the straight on tourist shot of the famous landmark. Time is limited. The vantage points are limited by the park management. Essentially you “stand here and take your shot.” The weather and the light are what they are. So you make the most of it. And maybe plan to come back for better light and weather…if you life allows.
This is Marblehead Light, in Marblehead OH, out on the peninsula that juts out into Lake Erie above Sandusky.
