Tiger: Rathambore Tiger Reserve, Rathambore National Park, Sawai Madhopur, India, March 2023 — I don’t know why it always surprises me but it always does when big cats behave just like house cats. Maybe it is really more amazing that house cats still behave so much like big cats. The “rub my tummy” move seems universal, though I am pretty sure no one, at lest no human, has ever rubbed the tummy of a Tiger when the tummy was on offer. Still. Cats will be cats. Tiger: Rathambore National Tiger Reserve, Sawai Madhopur, India, March 2023 — After three previous attempts our last Tiger drive this afternoon rewarded us with this young female resting in the shade above a pond. We watched her most of the afternoon as she did resting cat maneuvers. Her eyes were closed, cat like, most of the time, but occasionally she looked out across the pond at her admiring audience. Quite an experience! Sony Rx10iv at 600mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Pixelmator Photo and Apple Photos. ISO 1000 @ f4 @ 1/500th. Plus .3EV.

Gray Langur Monkey, Rathambore National Park, Sawai Madhopur, India, March 2023 — We took 2 Tiger Safaris today, and one birding safari, in Rathambore National Park. We saw no Tigers but we saw considerable other wildlife and birds. We found a troop of Gray Langur monkeys while birding inside the park, which included this mother and child. Langurs are peaceful, gentle, leaf eaters, with long prehensile tails. Sony Rx10iv at 561mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Plains Zebra: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — We have finally come to that moment…the last photo I took in Africa in 2022. This Zebra colt is saying good-by…good by to Uganda for another year. Just as well. I leave for India in a few days now, and I still have lots of photos from Costa Rica in December to share. 🙂 Sony Rx10iv at 100mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Pixelmator Pro and Apple Photos. ISO 100 @ f4 @ 1/500th. Good-by Africa!

Plains Zebra: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — The Zebra is abundant in East Africa, but is only found in two widely separated parks in Uganda: Lake Mburo in the south, and Kidepo in the north east. This is your classic jigsaw puzzle shot of three standing together. Sony Rx10iv at 150mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Pixelmator Pro and Apple Photos. ISO 160 @ f4 @ 1/320th. Plus .3EV (probably left over from a previous shot 🙂

Nubian Giraffes: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — coming up fast on my very last shots from our August trip to Uganda. These three youngsters were not terribly concerned that we were among them. Such handsome creatures. Sony Rx10iv at 517mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Pixelmator Pro and Apple Photos. ISO 640 @ f4 @ 1/500th.
Nubian (Rothschild’s) Giraffe: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — Not everyone thinks that Nubian (or Ugandan) Giraffe and Rothschild’s are the same sub-species of Giraffe…but there is no doubt that the Giraffes in Uganda used to be called Rothschild’s. These shots are from our second encounter with this same tower of giraffes on our early morning walking safari on our last day in Africa. Coming to the end here. This time we were even closer, almost right in amongst them. Sony Rx10iv at 469mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Pixelmator Pro and Apple Photos. ISO 250 @ f4 @ 1/500th. Plus .3 EV.

Blue-eared Starling: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — a very distant shot of a Blue-eared Starling…mostly just for the record. See, we saw it! This is an extreme crop so not a lot of feather detail here, but at least you can identify the bird. Sony Rx10iv at 600mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Pixelmator Pro and Apple Photos. ISO 200 @ f4 @ 1/500th. Plus 2EV for backlight.
Northern Cardinal: Kennebunk, Maine, USA, February 2023 — The birds were not only active at the feeders during the end of February snow-storm, they were active around the feeders…particularly active, bouncing around, fluttering, being generally aggressive toward each other for no apparent reason…active! This female Northern Cardinal posed for a second, and then danced in place for several. Sony Rx10iv at 600mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Process in Pixelmator Pro and Apple Photos. ISO 400 @ f4 @ 1/500th.

Brubru: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — A relatively common bird of the acacia thickets and semi-open savannah through-out East Africa, but this is the only one we saw on our trip, and we saw it on our walking safari on our very last day in Africa. Still, better late than never! It is a bush-shrike, and there is a race in Tanzania that does not have the white eye-brow…but this is the typical male. Sony Rx10iv at 600mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Pixelmator Pro and Apple Photos. ISO 100 @ f4 ! 1/500th. Plus 1.7EV for the backlight.
