Fall foliage in Southern Maine

Maybe I just have not gotten to the right places, but this just might be as good as the foliage gets this year in southern Maine. We still have not had a frost, and the maples are just giving up hope and falling off the trees with only a touch of yellow. In the usual places for an early turn, where the trees stand with their feet in a marshy spot, the trees are already bare. So it goes. We will enjoy the turn of the seasons one way or another. Maine! Odd year

It is an odd year when the oak leaves turn before the maples 🙂 This is a particulary exposed oak branch, low on sapling at the edge of the Bridle Path here in Kennebunk, Maine. OM Systems OMD EM5Mkiii with 12-45mm zoom at 24mm equivalent. In-camera HDR scene mode.

Maine! Catbird in the berries

Grey Catbird: York County, Maine, USA, September 2023 — The Winterberries are ripe and a host of Catbirds, staging for the trip south here on the Southern Maine coast, are feeding on them. I can’t ever remember seeing so many Catbirds as are in the woods right now. OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Pixomator Pro. ISO 500 @ f6.3 @ 1/640th.

That time of year again, and one of my favorite views. One of the Back Creek ponds along Rt. 9 near our home. I was on my eTrike, pulled over on the shoulder with cars wizzing by my elbow. iPhone SE with Sirui 18mm lens. Auto HDR.

House Finch away from home…

House Finch: Timber Point, Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, Maine. — I stopped by the newish Timber Point section of Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge on my way back from Biddeford Pool, when I was out looking for Snowy Owls the other day, and found a mixed feeding flock working the sumac between the parking and the entrance proper. I managed to catch this colorful specimen in all the feeding activity. Not a trick shot, but a tricky shot for the auto focus to manage. I am always amazed at how well it does. Bluebird posing

Eastern Bluebird: Kennebunk, Maine, USA — After yesterdays “action” shot of the bluebird taking off from its perch, I am not done with the bluebird yet. I have to share this shot of the bird posing nicely on the same perch, against that great background of late fall foliage. Sony Rx10iv at 600mm equivalent. Bluebird splash

Eastern Bluebird: Kennebunk, Maine, USA — not a perfect shot but it certainly caught my eye when I was importing my photos from a walk to Roger’s Pond the other day. The bluebird was a little too far away even at 600mm on the zoom, and the light was not good, but when a bluebird splashes across the frame like this, well it certainly catches your eye. 🙂 The colorful background helps too. Bluebird for November

Eastern Bluebird: Kennebunk, Maine, USA — We are privileged to have had Bluebirds in our yard just about year around these past few years. As long as I keep the mealworm feeder stocked, we see them just about every hour of the day. They join the Chickadees, Nuthatches, and Downy Woodpeckers as our truly “resident” yard birds. Canada Geese

Canada Geese: Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, Wells, Maine, USA — I know Canada Geese are reaching “vermin” status in some parts of the country, but I still like to see them as they gather in Southern Maine in late fall. They are still mostly in the marshes, not on folks lawns here yet. (My attitude might be different if I were a golfer, but I am not.) This group was in the marsh beside the Merriland River where it flows through Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, below the bluff where the headquarters buildings are and the Well’s National Estuarine Research Reserve at Laudholm Farms on the other side of the river. Sony Rx10iv at ~580 equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Polarr and Apple Photos and assembled in FrameMagic. ISO 400 and 640 @ f4 @ 1/500th.
