Maine! Catbird in the berries

Grey Catbird: York County, Maine, USA, September 2023 — The Winterberries are ripe and a host of Catbirds, staging for the trip south here on the Southern Maine coast, are feeding on them. I can’t ever remember seeing so many Catbirds as are in the woods right now. OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Maine! Apple eater

Eastern Chipmunk, Laudholm Farms, Wells, Maine, USA — There are lots of fallen apples in the old orchards at Laudholm Farms right now, and the Chipmunks are having a feast. They are so busy eating that they play little attention to passing humans, even those with cameras who very likely stop for a few photos. Or more. OM Systems OM1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Pixomator Pro. ISO 6400 @ f6.3 @ 1/1600th.

Maine! Racing the tide

Sanderlings: York County, Maine, USA, September 2023 — The Sanderlings would go out over the wet sand to feed and then race back as the next wave came in. It was fun to watch, but I had to watch my feet as well so as not to be caught by the wave myself. 🙂 OM Systems OM1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm equivalent. Maine! Sampling the Clam bisque

Sanderling: York County, Maine, USA, September 2023 — The Sanderlings were enjoying the water caught in the broken clam shells on the beach, the day after Hurricane Lee passed. I am not sure it was salt water from the ocean or fresh water from the rains…but they came back repeatedly to sample it. If you look closely at the first shot, you might see the water actually traveling up the tongue. OM Systems OM1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Pixomator Pro. ISO 200 @ f8 @ 1/1250th. -0.3EV.

Maine! Insect edition

From a walk around Roger’s Pond Park in Kennebunk, Maine. Banded Drone Fly, Bumble Bee, and Honey Bee…all busy gathering pollen while the September sun shines. Maine! Thursday Supplement, Eagle

Immature Bald Eagle: York County, Maine, USA, September 2023 — I went out looking for Eagles where we sometimes see them once the ice is in along the Mousam River…it is early yet but I can, and always do, hope. There were no Eagles perched but I caught this one soaring high overhead. It is an immature still, and lacks both the white head and tail. The flight however is still distinctive. OM Systems OM1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds-in-flight modifications. Processed in Pixomator Pro. ISO 320 @ f6.3 @ 1/2000th.

Maine! Resistance is futile…

Herring Gull: York County, Maine, USA, September 2023 — In the wake of Hurricane Lee’s passing, the beach was littered with clams scoured off the sea-bed by the heavy surf, and the gulls were having a feast. Many were still whole so the gulls were doing the fly-high-and-drop thing, but they were getting in, as lots of broken shells testified…as well as this photo of a Herring Gull in action. Maine! Egret takes flight

Great Egret: York County, Maine, USA, September 2023 — This is 4 shots of a Great Egret taking flight, composited into the same frame. Not perfect…but certainly eye-catching. Original shots: OM Systems OM1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Composited and processed in Pixomator Pro. Working with the number of images and layers needed pushed the limits of my Mac Air, but I am pretty happy with the result. Not your everyday egret shot. 🙂

Maine! Great Egret makes a wing

Great Egret: York County, Maine, USA — I always think that the wing of the Great Egret, or an egret of some kind, must have been the inspiration for angel wing paintings, and I always hope to catch a Great Egret preening. As it happens, they preen often and often extend their wings to get at the underside. The lighting here is dramatic. OM Systems OM1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. ISO 200 @ f6.3 @ 1/640th. -0.3EV.
