Maine! Flight against the light

Ringbilled Gull: York County, Maine, USA, November 2024 — I got down to the beach yesterday to see what was in the river mouth, hoping for a few winter ducks in close. Not much yet, but I had some fun with the gulls in flight with the sun behind them. Sony a6700 with Sony E70-350G at 525mm equivalent. Program mode with my birds-in-flight and action modifications. Processed in Photomator and Luminar Neo (a small amount of motion blur reduction).

Maine! By the glint in your eye

Ring-billed Gull: York County Maine, USA, September 2024 — There was a good sized flock of Ring-billed Gulls at the beach last week, working the surf line and just off-shore. They were pretty secure and very busy, so I worked my way close enough for some intimate portraits. I like the glint of sun in this one’s eye as it turned its head away from me just a bit, intent on something in the water. Sony a6700 with the Tamron 50-400 Di iii VC zoom at 600mm equivalent. Maine! Herring on the edge

Herring Gull: York County Maine, USA, September 2024 — The contour of our local beaches was radically altered by the storms of this past winter and spring. Our local beach has developed a sharp slope at least 8 feet tall at the tide line dropping off to sand flats only exposed at low tide. This Herring Gull was resting just at the edge of the drop, overhanging the drop, and seemed quite comfortable there. Surveying its domaine. It allowed this eye-level shot without my getting down in the sand. Gulls are not my favorite birds, and Herring Gulls are not my favorite gulls, but even I have to admit this is a handsome bird. Maine! Resistance is futile…

Herring Gull: York County, Maine, USA, September 2023 — In the wake of Hurricane Lee’s passing, the beach was littered with clams scoured off the sea-bed by the heavy surf, and the gulls were having a feast. Many were still whole so the gulls were doing the fly-high-and-drop thing, but they were getting in, as lots of broken shells testified…as well as this photo of a Herring Gull in action. Maine! Ring-bills in flight!

Ring-billed Gull: York County, Maine, USA, August 2023 — I am still trying to figure out my birds-in-fight modifications to program mode on my relatively new OM Systems OM-1…so I went down to the beach and river mouth to practice on some gulls and whatever else I could find there on a Sunday morning. There were lots of gulls in flight, but I only had one close flyover. These are three frames from one burst at 5fps as the gull swept by only maybe 20 feet over me, filling the frame at 800mm equivalent. I still need a lot of practice, and I am still tweaking the settings, but getting there. OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm equivalent. Program mode with my birds-in-flight modifications. Processed in Pixelmator Pro. ISO 320 @ f6.3 @ 1/3200th. Plus .7EV

Nubble Light

Nubble Light, Cape Neddick ME

On the way home from Easter Dinner at the relatives in York, we stopped for a moment at Nubble Light (well, we detoured to Nubble Light) so I could take a few shots. Nubble Light is one of my standard test subjects when I get a new camera…and it is one of my favorite “scenic” places to photograph along the southern Maine coast. I mean…well maintained romantic lighthouse, crashing surf, blue green sea, a few clouds in the sky…what more could you ask? And here the gull adds to the composition. 🙂

Considering Gull

image

On our rainy weekend I was reduced to shooting gulls out the car window at the beach. Easy. This specimen,  a Ring-billed Gull, posed nicely on top of the restricted parking sign. I am not sure what he was considering but he was certainly considering something. 🙂
