Cinnamon Fern (I think). While out looking for Lady Slipper Orchids in my secret spot here Kennebunk, I could not help but notice all the ferns somewhat past fiddle head stage. I love the ornate look of the coiled fern fonds. The two wider shots here are at 800mm with the M.Zuiko 100-400IS zoom on the OM System OM-1Mkii, for about a 1:2 magnification. The tighter shots are with the same set-up but with the 2x digital tele-extender added for a 1:1 magnification. Depending on the device you are viewing the photos on the close-up are probably life size or better. Program mode. Processed in Photomator.

Northern Parula: Magee Marsh Boardwalk, Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, Crane Creek State Park, Oak Harbor, Ohio, USA, May 2024 — Sometimes a bird just poses for you, as this Northern Parula did along the boardwalk one day during the Biggest Week in American Birding. OM System OM-1Mkii with M.Zuiko 100-400IS zoom at 800mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom bird modifications. Processed in Photomator.

Bobolink: York County, Maine, USA, May 2025 — It is Bobolink season again here in southern Maine. They seem to be nesting across the road from where they nested last year, as the farmer cut the field very short last fall and the grasses are just coming back now. I was wondering if they would return to these fields at all. They still like to sing from the tops of the trees along the road. These were taken from the seat of my eTrike. Maine! Lady Slipper bouquet — Lots of Lady Slippers still along my secret slope. This clump was one of many within sight. OM System OM-1 with M.Zuiko 12-45 f4 Pro zoom at 26mm equivalent. Program mode. In-camera focus stack. Processed in Photomator.

Cape May Warbler: Magee Marsh Boardwalk, Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, Crane Creek State Park, Oak Harbor, Ohio, USA, May 2024 — One of the more attractive, and the more present, warblers this year at Magee. There was at least one showing well each day I visited during the Biggest Week in American Birding, and generally several. OM System OM-1Mkii with M.Zuiko 100-400IS zoom at 800mm equivalent. Mixed flock of gulls and skimmers, mostly Laughing Gulls, a few Ring-billed Gulls, and see if you can find the Black Skimmers: Blackpoint Wildlife Drive, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Titusville, Florida, January 2024 — Something, perhaps an Osprey or and Eagle put this massed flock of gulls and skimmers up into the air. I just shot into the mass and sorted out this image as one of the better ones. OM System OM-1 with M.Zuiko 100-400IS zoom at 800mm equivalent. I went back to the woods to check on my patches of Lady Slipper Orchids here in Kennebunk, Maine. At least some of them have come out fully in the past 5 days and I spent over an hour on the slope where they grow. Others will still require another few days of warm sun. They are all somewhat small this year, maybe because of the peculiar weather we have been having…I don’t mean short, though most of them are…but the blossoms themselves seem a bit undersized compared to past years. This intentionally odd angle shot, an 9 frame in-camera focus stack, really shows off the bloom. OM System OM-1Mkii with M.Zuiko 12-45 f4 Pro zoom at 42mm equivalent. Program mode. Great Blue Heron: Blackpoint Wildlife Drive, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Titusville, Florida, USA, January 2024 — Nice Florida light and a cooperative Great Blue Heron along Blackpoint drive one morning during the Space Coast Bird and Nature Festival. OM System OM-1 with M.Zuiko 100-400IS zoom at 522mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom bird modifications. Processed in Photomator.

Northern Parula: Magee Marsh Boardwalk, Crane Creek State Park, Oak Harbor, Ohio, May 2024 — As I may have mentioned, there were lots and lots of Parulas along the boardwalk at Magee…almost as many as Yellow Warblers. Actually the numbers might have been “normal” but compared to other species, which were sparse, they seemed high. I came away with one of almost every possible pose. 🙂 (Exaggeration) OM System OM-1Mkii with M.Zuiko 100-400IS zoom at 800mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom bird modifications. Blue-winged Teal: Orlando Wetlands Park, Christmas, Florida, USA, January 2024 — Blue-winged Teal seem to be the most common duck at Orlando Wetlands in January. This is just a study in feather detail as this female gets all the feathers in the right place. OM System OM-1 with M.Zuiko 100-400IS zoom at 800mm equivalent.
