Red-bellied Woodpecker: Kennebunk, Maine, USA, October 2025 — A long lens and a high pixel count are needed to maintain detail in smallish birds at any distance…the smaller the bird the more of both you need. This Red-bellied Woodpecker was 40 feet at least from where I was standing and the 500mm reach of the Tamron 150-500 on the Sony a7CR (61mp) was just enough to render satisfying feather detail…or detail that satisfies me at normal screen resolutions…on the screen of my iPad Pro. I could hae managed with a shorter lens on a smaller sensor for posting here, and you would not have seen much difference. 🙂 Program mode with bird and wildlife modifications. Processed in Photomator.
