Meeting at the feeder

Tufted Titmouse and Downy Woodpecker: Kennebunk, Maine, USA, October 2025 — I wonder if anyone has ever done a serious study of how different bird species interact in the wild? We see them interact mostly around feeders. Our Downy Woodpecker seems to be on the same feeding schedule as our Tufted Titmouse family…or perhaps they just travel the same circuit and reach our stop together. Even so, I rarely see them at the same feeder at the same time. They seem to take turns. Again, there should be a whole field of study there. Sony a7CR. Tamron 150-500 at 500mm equivalent.
