Lighthouse over Rocks

Wood Island Light, at the mouth of the Saco River, off East Point in Biddeford Pool, ME. The flip out LCD on the Canon SX20IS got me down low, sitting on one of these rocks. I experimented with Program Shift for greater depth of field, but really did not need it in this situation. The metered f4 at this 60mm equivalent gave sufficient depth for the scene. In lower light, program shift would have been essential, since the SX20, like all P&Ss, favors  wider apertures and faster shutter speeds in Program mode.

As above, Canon SX20IS at 60mm equivalent. F4 @ 1/250th @ ISO 100. Programmed Auto.

Recovery for the sky and Lighthouse highlights. A touch of Fill Light. Blackpoint to the right slightly. Added Clarity and just a tiny amount of Vibrance. Sharpen landscapes preset.

From Around Home 2010.

For comparison, here is wider shot with more rocks.

Tidal Snow: Early Light

Last pic for the First Snow set. This bend in the tidal mouth of Back Creek where it flows into the Mousam River behind Parson’s Beach in Kennebunk ME becomes a graphic element in the composition, drawing the eye past the curve back to the snow covered trees on the far side of the marsh. The low light just after sunrise just skims the marsh.

Sony DSC H50 at about 70mm equivalent for framing. F4.0 @ 1/250th @ ISO 100. Programmed auto.

Added Clarity and Vibrance in Lightroom. Blackpoint slightly right. Sharpen Landscape preset.

Bound Sea at Sunset

The sun is still up there behind the clouds but the sunset effect is already happening.

Sony DSC H50 at 31mm equivalent. F5.6 @ 1/640th @ ISO 100. Programmed Auto.

Heavily post processed in Lightroom. Graduated filter effects top and bottom…dark on top, light on bottom. Added Clarity and Vibrance. Blackpoint to the right. Sharpen Landscape preset. Overall increased exposure.

Gulls Below the Surf

The gull standing were such a great subject, I was tempted to get down to sand level and see how they looked with the surf as a background. I was surprised at how high it rose above them. Moderate tel to compress the image planes, and tight cropping top and bottom emphasizes the horizontal lines of the image.

Sony DSC H50 at about 315mm equivalent. F4.5 @ 1/250th @ ISO 100. Programmed auto.

Cropped in Lightroom. Some Recovery for the sky an surf highlights. Blackpoint well to the right. Added Clarity and Vibrance and the Sharpen Landscapes preset.

Gulls in Sun Under Clouds

Sometimes the sun, as it sets, finds the crack between the cloud cover and the horizon (should there be one) and has one last shine. There is nothing that matches that particular light. This late afternoon in question I was shooting winter gulls on a little beach in Kennebunk when it happened, and the way the gulls lined the tide line standing on their own reflections in the wet sand, and the curve of the land out to see, and the lone house…and that subtle blush of sunset along the horizon.

Sony DSC H50 40mm equivalent. F4.0 @ 1/250th @ ISO 100. Programmed auto.

Recovery for the sky in Lightroom (but not much), added Clarity and Vibrance. Blackpoint slightly right. Sharpen Landscape preset.

Another from a Cape May Dawn

Another from a Cape May Dawn

Happy Sunday!

Capy May Gingerbread is always a treat. And the fad for white gingerbread is well past, or never caught on in Cape May. The Victorian era homes, now mostly B&Bs are painted as they were when new, in a full rainbow of colors. Even in the light of a cloudy dawn they have a glow.

Sony DSC H50 at about 110mm equivalent. F4.0 @ 1/60th @ ISO 100. Programmed auto.

This is another shot that required Lightroom’s Graduated Filter to bring up the foreground and make the scene look something like it would to the naked eye. GF from the bottom with added exposure, clarity, and just a touch of contrast. General application of Recover for the sky. Added Clarity and Vibrance and Sharpen Landscapes preset. Cropped slightly from both bottom and top for composition.

From Cape May 10/09.

For those of you who love Gingerbread, I walked around Cape May late yesterday afternoon as the rain held off and shot a quick  gallery of Gingerbread images, using my little pocket Sanyo camera, to show my wife what Cape May is like. You might enjoy it too. Best Quality Cape May Gingerbread on Posterous.

Amazing Grace Trailing Her Nets

Amazing Grace Trailing Her Nets

Most of the shrimpers off Jekyll Island GA are nothing much to look at: working boats, well worked, and looking every bit of it. The Amazing Grace is amazingly well kept, and a bit more elegant in her lines. Quite a site here as she trails her nets off the beach at the center of Jekyll Island.

There were huge (well, at least very large) signs here saying “keep off the dunes” so I was limited to standing on the porch of the convention center (about 3 feet off the sand), flipping the LCD on the H50 over and down, and holding the camera at arms reach over my head to get enough height for this shot over the dunes.

Sony H50 at about 180mm equivalent. F5.6 @ 1/800th @ ISO 100. Programed auto.

Cropped in Lightroom to place the horizon on the lower rule of thirds line. Blackpoint slightly to the right. Added Clarity and Vibrance, and Sharpen landscape preset.

Jekyll Island Driftwood and St. Simons Light

Jekyll Island Driftwood and St. Simons Light

I take a few shots of the driftwood on the north end of Jekyll Island every year. Due, by some theories, to global warming, the sea is rising and slowly the beach is cutting back further and further into the forest. More trees fall every year. There are always new shapes to photograph by October when I visit. Often, as here, I find a formation to frame the light house on St. Simons Island across the channel.

Sony DSC H50 at 31mm equivalent. F5.6 @ 1/800th @ ISO 100. Programed auto.

A bit of Recovery in Lightroom for the highlights on the bleached wood. Added Clarity and Vibrance in the Presence panel. Sharpen landscapes preset. Cropped slightly from the top for composition.

Bluefish Cove

Bluefish Cove

I almost missed this. I was done for the day as the fog rolled in more heavily across Point Lobos after noon, and was headed out when I though, “Oh why not check Whaler’s Cove?” And, wouldn’t you know, the fog still stood well off there and the whole bay opened clear. There is a trail up to this vista from the parking lot (where you joggle with the divers for space), and it is always worth a look. As you can see, the fog was just drifting over the point and East Grove, but the water of Bluefish Bay was just as named: intense blue.

Sony DSC H50 at 31mm equivalent. F5.6 @ 1/640th @ ISO 100. Programed auto.

Recovery in Lightroom for the white highlights and to bring up the fog. Blackpoint to the right. Added Clarity and Vibrance in the Presence panel. Sharpen landscape preset.

Hidden Beach Again

Hidden Beach Again

Happy Sunday!

A second view of Hidden Beach at Point Lobos, CA. (see 9/29) This time from actual beach level using the H50’s flip out monitor and the super macro ability to create an image with maximum depth. Because of the fog I did not have to worry about a sharp horizon in this shot.

Sony DSC H50 at 31mm equivalent. F5.6 @ 1/320th @ ISO 100. Programed Auto.

In Lightroom, just added Clarity and Vibrance and Sharpen landscape preset. Blackpoint just to the right.
