This is an impulse I have never understood. Pool, fountain, or in this case the head of the artificial waterfall at the Palizzo in Vegas. The moving water here adds what is perhaps an extra dimension.

A Twitter friend was apparently watching the weather channel and saw the report of a rare fog in Las Vegas and twittered me to ask if I was photographing it. I had not yet opened the drapes of my 18th floor room overlooking Vegas and a corner of the strip. When I did, the sun was just rising…the mountains behind Treasure Island were covered with snow and the valley was indeed filled with fog. I took many shots.
This one required a good deal of perspective and distortion correction in PhotoShop Elements using the Camera Distortion filter…after my normal processing in Lightroom: Blackpoint right, Fill Light, Clarity and Vibrance, and Sharpen Landscape.

Not your usual view of Vegas.

Happy December! Happy December 2009!
The post and beam, half timbered construction of Old Town Wetzlar is always fascinating, especially as it is, for the most part, really well kept up or restored…as though the whole city acts as a museum. And the work is ongoing. I have never been there when several of the Old Town buildings were not under restoration. On this trip there were cranes and scaffolding and house jacks everywhere.
The result is, however, a wonderful display of architectural detail and a real sense of another time. This house is on a narrow side street just over the bridge (now, as in past, a thriving commercial center with ground floor shops and dwellings above).

One of the lessons of this trip and my Pic of the Day series using the images is how much lower the overall light levels are in Europe. This shot was taken on a cloudy day, but still, f3.2 @ 1/60th? I would expect exposure values at least twice that in a similar shot anywhere in the US.
Very minimal processing in Lightroom. Adjustments to Blackpoint, Clarity, Vibrance, and Sharpening.
This is a shot even closer in.
Again the Dom, this time from the Old Town just across the bridge. This alley/stair has always fascinated me with its mixture of forms and textures. The distortions of the Sony H50 lens are obvious here, but any lens in this situation is going to show at its worst.

My usual in Lightroom. Blackpoint right, added Clarity and Vibrance. Sharpen Landscape preset.

Happy Sunday.
The Dom, almost a cathedral, was built over several centuries beginning in the 1100s. It was never finished. Hence the almost. The building follows the historical fortunes of the town of Wetzlar as the salt and iron trades waxed and waned in Germany…not to mention the political tides, as the area saw active warfare all through the middle ages (not to mention in our current era). As the city fathers had funds, they undertook massive and ambitious building plans on the Dom, necessarily given the time lapses, under several different architects, each with a vision suitable to his time. There are doors in the interior walls that open on empty space, and the unfinished new cathedral surrounds the more or less complete old church like a broken shell. The space between the two walls became a graveyard over the years, and literally thousands are buried there. Two main towers were planned. One is complete. The other just a stump.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about the Dom, from my viewpoint, is that is used by both the Catholic and Protestant communions in Wetzlar. The Catholic sanctuary faces one direction toward an alter, and the Protestant sanctuary faces the other toward a pulpit. They meet in the back rows exactly in the center of the massive central church.
This is an unconventional view, taken from blocks away and up the hill by the amphitheater. I had to climb up steps and hold my camera above my head to get over the intervening buildings and trees. Even then the bottom of the image has been cropped off.
You can see the very different types of architecture in this one shot.

This house is sunk in between two arched gates on an alley at the upper edge of Old Town Wetzlar. The third figure from the left is an actual window. I have photographed it several times, but on this day, the gentleman leaning out smoking added the necessary element.
Sony DSC H50 at full wide (31mm equivalent). F2.8 @ 1/60th @ ISO 100. Programmed auto.
Minimal processing in Lightroom (added Clarity and Vibrance, Sharpen Landscape preset). Cropped a bit to place the gentleman in a better spot compositionally.

Happy Thanksgiving Day to all!
The stone bridge that connects Old and New Towns in Wetzlar, Germany is one of the major tourists attractions, maybe just behind the The Dom…the almost cathedral that dominates the Old Town skyline. In this shot, taken low to catch the arch of the bridge, you get both.
Despite the less than ideal light, the Sony H50 manages enough depth of field for an effective shot.

The Lahn runs through north west Germany for many miles, and is a famous canoeing river. In summer it is common to see parties of canoes working their way down the series of rapids and falls as the river passes between old Town Wetzlar and the new, and there are docks and ramps and tie-up points all along. This image was captured from one of the canoe docks, just downriver from the floating bridge (only deployed in summer) and just upriver from the famous stone bridge to Old Town. In the background you see the Leica plants. The reeds in the foreground are common reed (phragmities)…found around the globe. You can see the park along the Lahn on the far side of the river…this park runs most of the length of Wetzlar on one side of the river or the other.
No special challenges in this shot, other than the low light levels and the reeds blowing in the wind. I took several shots to catch them where I wanted them in the frame.

Kloster Arnsburg, Lich Germany. There is something I always find attractive in old stone work…ancient buildings…ruins…etc. This is is just a section of the wall of the cloister…one frame’s full.
