Bald Eagle: York County, Maine, USA, January 2024 — We will pause our coverage of my December trip to Costa Rice for this local update. I went out yesterday, after finishing up clearing the drive, and resting for while, to photograph the fresh fallen snow, and check a few spots for birds. You never know if a Snowy Owl might have blown in on the storm. No owls, but our resident Eagle flew into one of its favored perches above the river while I parked the car, and sat for a few portrait shots before showing obvious signs of flight. I could not get my finger off the shutter release long enough to switch to my birds-in-flight mode…in hindsight I should have taken the half second it takes to do that when I first began to think the eagle was about to fly…but I didn’t. Next time. Still I got a few shots as the eagle passed in front of me fairly close. It is amazing how much bigger the bird looks in flight than it does sitting on a branch. Common Loon: York County, Maine, USA, November 2023 — Early in the morning, the Loon catches breakfast. 🙂 OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm IS zoom at 800mm equivalent. Bald Eagle: York County, Maine, USA, November 2023 — It is rare to see our local Eagle anywhere but in the tallest pine on the far side of the river, on his favorite branch, but one day last week he settled in a autumn oak closer to the water and closer to me. Still too far for the best photography, but better! Whatever he was doing in the second shot, it was not screaming…completely silent. OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400 IS zoom at 800mm equivalent. Canada Geese: I was photographing a small flock of Canada Geese who had spent the night at the high tide mark in one of our tidal rivers when they decided it was time to get up. Nothing has a messier take off than a flock of geese. Splish splash! And the noise! OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm equivalent. Ring-billed Gull: York County, Maine, USA, November 2023 — Difficult lighting, but a show for sure. A small flock of Ring-billed Gulls soaring at eye-level…playing in the strong wind off the point of beach where a tidal river meets the sea. These are 2 selected by my long lens. Precision formation flying at its best. OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm equivalent. Program mode with my birds-in-flight modifications. Processed in Photomator.

Great Blue Heron: York County, Maine, USA, November 2023 — What goes up must come down, eventually even if you are a bird. This Great Blue Heron startled, very early one morning when the light was still at a low angle, and flew deeper into the marsh, where I captured it coming down. Bald Eagle: York County, Maine, USA, November 2023 — Our local eagles spend most of their time, when they are hanging out in the pines above the river, just sitting upright and watching the water below them. I have hundreds of photos of them in that pose from previous years, and dozens already from this year. Occasionally they do something different, but you have to be on hand and ready when it happens. This shot was taken just after 11 am, and the light was already going around slightly behind the bird, making for interesting rim-light. OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm equivalent. Great Blue Heron: York County, Maine, USA, November 2023 — Still a few Great Blue Herons around and they are still having success with the fishing. I like the pose here…with a fresh caught morsel, and I love the light…early in the morning when the sun is still low in the November sky and the reflections from the browning marsh dominating the water. The ripples from the strike and the reflection of the heron make for a powerful composition. Or that is what I think 🙂 OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm equivalent. Bufflehead: York County, Maine, USA, November 2023 — Male and female Bufflehead, in the November morning sun. The low bright light brings out the iridescent colors of the males head. Belted Kingfisher: York County, Maine, USA, November 2023 — This photo was taken from too far away and cropped to heavily to be a great photo, but I don’t see our only Kingfisher here in southern Maine as often as I would like, and they are always wary…so I take what I can get. They are around. I just don’t see them. And the kingfishers must might be my favorite birds, if I allowed myself such an indulgence. 🙂 OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm equivalent.
