Wednesday extra: Monitor Lizard
Not our first Nile Monitor Lizard of the trip to Uganda in August…we saw one from the boat on the actual Nile in Murchinson Falls National Park earlier, but we were on foot for this one…beside the Kazinga Channel in the northern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Little lion in the tall grass
On our first pass by this spot, the lions were there, or were presumed to be there, as they had been seen a few moments before…but we could not find them in the long grasses. On our way back out, our driver/guide Moses spotted this cub, maybe two years old (practically a teenager in lion terms)…just a set of ears twitching above the grasses…and we watched as it eventually got up and moved around and gave us better views…still in the long grass…but better. The lions of Queen Elizabeth are well studied and monitored. The mom in this small pride wears a radio collar, so the rangers pretty much know where the pride is on a day to day basis. Sunday Supplement: Vervet Monkey
A young Vervet Monkey in a Candelabra Tree in the northern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda in August of this year. I am not sure what it is looking at…but it is certainly looking! Zitting Cisticola
Zitting Cisticola: Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — We saw lots of Zitting Cisticolas, both at Queen Elizabeth and at Murchison Falls. Not always in such good light or posing so nicely 🙂 They do like to get up on the top of acacia bush and zit. Sony Rx10iv at 573mm equivalent. Little Greenbul
Little Greenbul: Crater lakes near Kibale National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — Another bird from our productive stop between the lakes where the Cinnamon-chested Bee-eaters nest. The Little Greenbul is not as spectacular as a Bee-eater, but it is louder! It is in full song here. I had to wonder why it is a “greenbul” and it turns out it is pretty logical. It is green and it is a member of the bulbul family. I will save finding out what a bulbul is a bulbul for another day. Sony Rx10iv at 600mm equivalent. Chimpanzee edition #2
A bit closer shot of the infant and mom from our Chimpanzee Trek at Kibale National Park in Uganda last August. I am not a good judge but I would guess this chimp is only a few months old. Great Egret views
Great Egret: Kennebunk, Maine, USA, September 2022 — While I have been sharing my photos from Uganda, of course life here in Maine has been going on. The other day I rode my eTrike on one of my loops and took a detour down to our local beach. There were a dozen or more Great Egrets in the marshes behind the dunes…this one quite close to the road. While I watched, it flew from one side of the road out over the tidal creek and back to the other side, even closer. These shots were taken without getting off my trike. 🙂 There was also a constant stream of Monarch Butterflies and Green Darner Dragonflies coming through headed south. I have a feeling that if I had time to sit and count them I would have totaled in the thousands for both for the day. Sony Rx10iv at 600mm equivalent. African Elephant: Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — I have already shared two images of this solitary bull elephant that we encountered early on our final morning in Murchison Falls National Park. After about 5 minutes of our sitting in the Land Cruiser watching him eat, he got tired of our attention, and turned to move us on. Not quite a mock charge, but he was definitely headed our way, so, of course, our guide let out the clutch and we were off. Sony Rx10iv at 97mm equivalent (we were close!). Elephant Edition: Early encounter 2
African Elephant: Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — Another shot from our early morning elephant encounter, on our last morning in Murchison Falls National Park. A well grown male posing for us as it plucked leaves from an acacia tree. Uganda’s elephants do not tend to have the huge tusks you see in Kenya (for instance), but the herds are still recovering from the days of Idi Amin when his soldiers slaughtered many thousands for their tusks. After Amin’s overthrow, even more elephants were killed by both sides for food and profit. It has been a hard road back for Ugandan elephants. Sony Rx10iv at 91mm equivalent.
