Costa Rica! Olive-backed Euphonia

Olive-backed Euphonia (male and female): Dave and Dave’s Costa Rican Nature Park, La Vergin, Costa Rica, December 2023 — Euphonia’s are small finches of the American tropics. They tend to be seen in mixed feeding flocks with Honeycreepers and other Tanagers. They were part of such a flock at Dave and Dave’s, along with Blue-Grey Tanager and Green Honeycreeper, feeding on the berries along the viewing platform. OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm IS zoom at 800mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Photomator.

Costa Rica! Chestnut-headed Oropendola

Chestnut-headed Oropendola: Dave and Dave’s Costa Rican Nature Park, La Vergin, Costa Rica, December 2023 — I have never seen a Chestnut-headed Oropendola at Selva Verde lodge, right on the Sarapiqui River, but they are common at Dave and Dave’s on the sharp bluff 100 feet above the river…but that might be because Dave and Dave’s is at canopy hight for the trees growing below, and perhaps Chestnut-headed are less likely to drop down to feeders than Montezuma’s are. ?? I have seen both at Dave and Dave’s. Not quite as colorful as the Montezuma, the Chestnut-headed is still an impressive bird. They also build the same kind of hanging, oriole-like (they are indeed members of the Oriole family), nests in colonies and though I did a google search I could find no indication that they ever share a nesting colony with their slightly larger cousins. Costa Rica! Green Honeycreeper

Green Honeycreeper (male and female): Dave and Dave’s Costa Rican Nature Park, La Vergin, Costa Rica, December 2023 — Clearly the Green Honeycreeper is named for the female of the species…otherwise it would be the turquoise honeycreeper. In whichever sex and color it is a striking bird of the fruiting undergrowth under the rainforest canopy. A member of the tanager family, it is generally part of a mixed feeding flock with other honeycreepers, tanagers, and euphonias. They are often seen in pairs, as we encountered them at Dave and Dave’s. OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm IS zoom at 800mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Costa Rica! Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer

Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer: Dave and Dave’s Costa Rican Nature Park, La Vergin, Costa Rica, December 2023 — Catching the Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer hovering by the flowers is another goal of every visit to Dave and Dave’s. On a morning visit, when the birds are most active, the light is not ideal, but it makes for some dramatic backlighting. Gotta love the red feet! At one time this was called the “red-footed plumeleteer. OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm IS zoom. Program mode with my custom birds in flight modifications. Processed in Photomator. These are natural light photos…no flash.

Costa Rica! Rufous-tailed Hummingbird

Rufous-tailed Hummingbird: Dave and Dave’s Costa Rican Nature Park, La Vergin, Costa Rica, December 2023 — The Rufous-tailed Hummingbird showing off its name-sake tail with the sun behind it. The different gorget colors are purely due to the angle of the light. The scientific name of this bird comes from the Aztec for warrior, which is appropriate as in many places the Rufous-tiled dominates feeders and flowering plants…vigorously guarding them from all other species. At Dave and Dave’s the White-necked Jacobins dominate even the Rufous-tailed, but perhaps just because their numbers are higher. OM Systems OM-1 with the ED 100-400mm IS zoom at 800mm equivalent. Costa Rica! Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer

Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer: Dave and Dave’s Costa Rican Nature Reserve, La Vergin, Costa Rica, December 2023 — Another hummingbird from Dave and Dave’s. More rare than the White-necked Jacobin, both in general and at the flowers at Dave and Dave’s, which makes it a more special bird to see and photograph. However the dominant White-necked Jacobins do their best to keep the Plumeleteer away from the feeding area, so they are quick in and out. This one managed a brief rest stop right in front of us. The only Central American hummingbird with red feet! OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm IS zoom at 472mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds in flight modifications. Costa Rica! White-necked Jacobin

White-necked Jacobin: Dave and Dave’s Costa Rican Nature Reserve, La Vergin, Costa Rica, December 2023 — Dave and Dave’s is one of my favorite stops for birds and bird photography in the Sarapiqui Valley. Perched on a bluff at canopy level above the river, their rewilded Banana plantation attracts birds of both the canopy and the forest. And their set-up off the back deck is ideal for hummingbird photography. White-necked Jacobin is the dominant species, but they attract several others as well. OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm IS zoom at 800mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds in flight modifications. Natural light (no flash). Processed in Photomator. Costa Rica! Coati

Coati: Selva Verde Lodge and Reserve, Sarapiqui, Costa Rica, December 2023 — The resident Coati (also known as a Coatimundis) at Selva Verde Lodge. It hangs out in the trees above the feeding station all day, occasionally coming down to raid the stock of plantains and mangos on the feeding tables. It is a member of the same family as raccoons. Perhaps you can see the resemblance. OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm, 648, and 246mm equivalents. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Costa Rica! Boat-billed Heron

Boat-billed Heron: Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, December 2023 — Not my best shot of a Boat-billed Heron, since his signature feature…the huge flat bill, is completely hidden under his wing…but still 🙂 The bird was tucked well back into the dark foliage above the water at the junction of the Sarapiqui and Puerto Viejo rivers. It took some tricky maneuvering on the part of our boat captain to get us even this good a view. OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm IS zoom at 800mm equivalent. Costa Rica! finishing up the Tiger

Bare-throated Tiger-heron (chick): Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, December 2023 — A few last photos of the Bare-throated Tiger-Heron chick and some of its antics. A very photogenic bird. From the boat on the Sarapiqui River upstream from Puerto Viejo. OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm IS zoom at 454mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications.
