Uganda Edition: African Fish Eagle
African Fish Eagle: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — Certainly one of the most impressive and recognizable birds of Africa…with a range through all but very center of sub-Saharan Africa (all of the “safari” countries), and a common sight where ever there are larger rivers and lakes. These birds were perched along the shore of Lake Mburo, and seen from the tour boat on the lake on our late afternoon excursion. Sony Rx10iv at 600mm equivalent. Uganda Edition: African Finfoot
African Finfoot: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — Another highlight of the boat tour on Lake Mburo. The African Finfoot has two distinct ranges in East Africa, one along the western borders of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania and one along the south/north borders of western Kenya and Tanzania, with a lot of Finfootless territory in between. Uganda Edition: Striated Heron
Striated Heron: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — we saw this small heron, very like the Green Heron, along the shore of Lake Mburo from our tour boat. The Striated Heron’s range spans the tropics…Central and South America, across Africa, through all of Asia, and on the larger pacific islands and the Galapagos. I have seen it on the Galapagos and along the Amazon in Peru, as well as in Panama…and now, Africa! (I will keep an eye out for it in India in March 🙂 Sony Rx10iv at 600mm equivalent. Uganda Edition: Ruppell’s Starling
Ruppell’s Starling: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — This shot was taken from the last tour boat on Lake Mburo for the day. They held the boat for us or we would not have made it. Too may photo-stops on the way through the park. Ruppell’s Starling is a long-tailed starling, common everywhere in Uganda in savannahs and lawns. Though it looks black in some light, it is actually quite colorful with it’s green and purple iridescence. Sony Rx10iv at 600mm equivalent. Uganda Edition: Eland!
Common Eland: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — No the best photo, but our only sighting of the somewhat shy Elands of Lake Mburo National Park. The two Eland species, Common and Giant, are the largest antelope in the world. Lake Mburo has the Common, which is just slightly smaller on average than the Giant. Still, impressive animals. Uganda Edition: Olive Baboon
Olive Baboon: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — The Olive Baboon is the only baboon species in Uganda, and this is, of course, the classic shot of the youngster catching a ride. Still taken our first day in the park wile we were still on our way to lake for our afternoon boat safari. Sony Rx10iv at 517mm equivalent. Uganda Edition: Impala!
Impala: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — Lake Mburo is the only national park in Uganda to host Impala. Everywhere else the most elegant of antelope (in my humble opinion) is replaced by the closely related, slightly stockier, Uganda Kob. We were still on our way down to the Lake for the Lake cruse when we found a small herd of Impala within sight of the road. Sony Rx10iv around 520mm equivalent. Uganda Edition: Topi
Topi: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — The only two parks in Uganda where you are likely to see Topi are the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth and Lake Mburo. This one was beside the road as we drove through the park to get to our bout tour on the lake. Though it is a fairly large antelope, the Topi is often sighted as the fasted African antelope, at least over short distances. Sony Rx10iv at 238mm equivalent. Uganda Edition: Immature Bateleur
Bateleur: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — We looked through 3 National Parks and along the roads between them for an adult Bateleur, which is among the most beautiful of Hawk-Eagles, and though we saw several immatures, we never did see an adult. This immature was along the road on our way to the boat trip on Lake Mburo on our first afternoon there. Note the round, owl-like face and the short tail. Uganda Edition: Defassa Waterbuck
Defassa Waterbuck: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — Male and female Waterbuck. The male was from our early morning walking safari and the female was on the way to our lodge when we had first arrived in the Park. Magnificent animals!
