Frozen rapids

Mousam River, Kennebunk, Maine, February 2026 — I have mentioned several times how completely the rapids below the dam in Kennebunk on the Mousam River are frozen over this year…not normal for many years now. You can see the record of how the moving water has resisted in the folds and buckles in the ice. This is still slightly tidal water as well, so it rises and falls over the course of the day. For it to freeze this solid, you know it has to be cold, and cold for an unusually long time. Mind you, I would not walk out on this ice (though the Mallards do). There is a beauty to the frozen river…I can find a place for it in the warmth of my heart, but I would not want to be in it. Sony a6700. Sigma 16-300 at 59mm equivalent field of view.
