Bluebird’s bib

Eastern Bluebird: Kennebunk, Maine, USA, November 2025 — The gorget on a hummingbird is obvious. The feathers of chin and neck “hang down” over the breast like a bib…we see it clearly because it “lights up” when the angle is just right, and because the bird can “flash” it by changing the angle of the bib feathers. But this shot of the Eastern Bluebird shows the same “bib” structure in the feathers of the throat. Since they are not iridescent it is not so obvious, and I am not certain the Bluebird has such fine control over their alignment…but here the passing wind is doing the job of articulating the bib to make it obvious. I find that interesting. 🙂 Sony a7CR. Tamron 150-500 at 500mm. Program with bird and wildlife modifications. Processed in Photomator.
