6/7/2011: Lady Slippers Reprise (the first movement)

I posted this pic on the left, taken at Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Wells ME, on 5/24, exactly two weeks ago. The shot above is the same stand of Lady Slippers, now in full bloom. All of the Lady Slippers this year seem a bit paler than last…as well as being almost three weeks late blooming…but this clump in particular is unusually pale. The light coming through them still brings out the delicate pinks in a way that reflected light never could.

Nikon Coolpix P500 in Close Up Scene mode (assisted macro) at 32mm equivalent field of view, f3.7 @ 1/250th @ ISO 160.

Processed in Lightroom for Clarity and Sharpness.

And just a slightly closer view.

Assisted Macro (Close Up Scene Mode) preselects the zoom setting that gives the largest image scale and the closest focus (32mm), the most effective aperture, and sets the focus to continuous and increases sensitivity to close objects (focus works better than just setting the focus control on macro). I suspect, from the look of the images, that it also does some processing of the backgrounds to make them look more out of focus than would be normal with a small sensor/short focal length camera. You can override the zoom setting, of course, and still get the effects at greater distances.
