Maine! Afternoon Eagle

Bald Eagle: Kennebunk, York County, Maine, USA, November 2023 — These past few weeks I have found the Eagle on its favorite perch above the river several times in the early morning, and I have featured a couple of shots of it in the early level sun. It is much less common to see it there in the afternoon, and much more difficult to photograph it as the sun is then behind it. Still, when it is there, you have to try 🙂 OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm equivalent (and cropped to at least 1600mm equivalent field of view). Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Photomator.

Maine! early light Eagle

Bald Eagle: York County, Maine, USA, November 2023 — Yesterday I was out early, dropping my wife off at church, so I swung by our local Eagle spot to see if I might find a bird. I say Eagle spot…some years a pair hangs out there all winter, and one year they even had a young bird with them…and then some years you do not see one at all. This might be a good year. This adult bird was catching the morning rays and warming up for the day high up in a big pine on their favorite perch. Not as close as I would like, but we take what we can get. OM Systems OM-1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. -1.0 EV to maintain detail on that white head. 🙂 Processed in Photomator. Cropped considerably.

Maine! Thursday Supplement, Eagle

Immature Bald Eagle: York County, Maine, USA, September 2023 — I went out looking for Eagles where we sometimes see them once the ice is in along the Mousam River…it is early yet but I can, and always do, hope. There were no Eagles perched but I caught this one soaring high overhead. It is an immature still, and lacks both the white head and tail. The flight however is still distinctive. OM Systems OM1 with ED 100-400mm zoom at 800mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds-in-flight modifications. Processed in Pixomator Pro. ISO 320 @ f6.3 @ 1/2000th.

Crested Serpent Eagle

Crested Serpent Eagle: Rathambore National Park, Sawai Madhopur, India, March 2023 — Still no Tigers, but this nice Crested Serpent Eagle along the way. Sony Rx10iv at 600mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Pixelmator Photo and Apple Photos. ISO 640 @ f4 @ 1/500th.

Uganda Edition: Immature Bateleur

Immature Bateleur: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — I mentioned when I last posted an immature Bateleur, that though we saw NO adults, we saw a lot of immatures. We kept looking, but they were all immatures in 2022. This one sat long enough for us to circle around the tree for a better shot…though still not good light. Sony Rx10iv at 591mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Pixelmator Pro and Apple Photos. ISO 100 @ f4 @ 1/500th.

Uganda Edition: African Fish Eagle

African Fish Eagle: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — There were more Fish Eagles along the shore of Lake Mburo than I have ever seen elsewhere…and that is saying quite a lot, as they are common bird all through sub-Saharan Africa wherever there is water. This pair posed about as nicely as you could want. Sony Rx10iv at 600mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Pixelmator Photo and Apple Photos. ISO 320 @ f4 @ !/500th.

Uganda Edition: African Fish Eagle

African Fish Eagle: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — Certainly one of the most impressive and recognizable birds of Africa…with a range through all but very center of sub-Saharan Africa (all of the “safari” countries), and a common sight where ever there are larger rivers and lakes. These birds were perched along the shore of Lake Mburo, and seen from the tour boat on the lake on our late afternoon excursion. Sony Rx10iv at 600mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Pixelmotor Pro and Apple Photos. ISO 320 @ f4 @ 1/500th.

Uganda Edition: Immature Bateleur

Bateleur: Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — We looked through 3 National Parks and along the roads between them for an adult Bateleur, which is among the most beautiful of Hawk-Eagles, and though we saw several immatures, we never did see an adult. This immature was along the road on our way to the boat trip on Lake Mburo on our first afternoon there. Note the round, owl-like face and the short tail. Without the bold colors of the adult, the shape is identifying characteristic of the bird. Sony Rx10iv at 600mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Pixelmator Photo and Apple Photos. ISO 100 @ f4 @ 1/800th.

Long-crested Eagle

Long-crested Eagle: Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — The Long-crested Eagle is listed in the field guides with the Hawk-Eagles, but it is currently placed alone in its own genus…and may be closely related to the Spotted-eagles. Both of these birds were distant, one just before lunch in the northern sector of the park, and one late the next afternoon in the southern, Ishasha sector, so heat haze was an issue, especially in the second shot. Long-crested Eagles like to hunt from a perch and rarely soar, so both of these shots are typical of the species. Sony Rx10iv at 600mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Pixelmator Photo and Apple Photos. ISO 100 @ f4 @ 1/800th and 1/640th. The shot against the sky was plus 1.3EV.

Black-chested Snake-Eagle

Black-chested Snake-Eagle: Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda, August 2022 — Not the most attractive of perches…but still…a Black-chested Snake-Eagle is a good bird at any time. (Any eagle for that matter!) On the power lines beside the highway where it runs trough Queen Elizabeth National Park. Sony Rx10iv at 600mm equivalent. Program mode with my custom birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Pixelmator Photo and Apple Photos. ISO 100 @ f4 @ 1/800th. Plus 1.7EV for the terrible lighting.
