Chipmunk, Timber Point, Rachel Carson NWR, Goose Rocks Maine<\/p><\/div>\n
This little Chipmunk inspired yesterday’s Day Poem, and my wife reminded me that, while it might have been the first forest dwelling Chipmunk we have seen this season, our back deck Chipper who comes for the scattered seeds under the feeders, has already put in an appearance. Does not count! He is almost a tame Chipmunk, or more like something in our own private backyard zoo. \ud83d\ude42 This fellow on the other hand, as you can clearly see, has not been caging sunflower seeds this spring. He is still winter lean. But that is in the poem.<\/p>\n
Walking out on Timber Point
\nand across the bar at low tide
\nto Timber Island today, we
\nencountered our first chipmunk
\nof the season…up from his
\nwinter nap, looking lean, but
\nhealthy, eager as ever for
\nwhatever he could find in
\nthe leaf litter to sustain him.<\/p>\n
He stood a second, on hind
\nlegs, against a slanting stick,
\nhis tail curled up behind,
\nthe very picture of anticipation…
\nhope personified…if you will
\nlet me get away with saying
\nthat of a chipmunk, ready
\nfor warmer days and the coming
\nround of sprouts, shoots, buds,
\nblossoms…but ready too, if
\nnothing better is on offer,
\nto dine on a half rotten acorn
\nhidden in dim back beyond
\nof the abundant fall gone by.<\/p>\n
Surely he can not remember,
\nand each acorn he finds
\nmust come as total surprise,
\nmanna from heaven, a gift
\noutright, amazing grace, if
\nhe only knew…but then you
\nalready let me get away
\nwith calling him a person.<\/p>\n
