Lady Slipper Orchid<\/p><\/div>\n

Happy Sunday. The Lady Slipper Orchid is somehow appropriate to the day.<\/p>\n

This is a good year for Lady Slipper Orchids. This is a great<\/em> year for Lady Slippers. I have never seen them in bunches like this. One bloom. Two together, but nothing like the clusters in full cry at Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge yesterday.<\/p>\n

The light was fickle, with moments of almost sun breaking through to full overcast within the hour and a half I spent there. Getting the colors right down on the forest floor was a bit of a trick.<\/p>\n

Because of the way the Lady Slipper hangs you pretty much have to get down low for the full effect. From above, the\u00a0bracts hood the bloom and it has, especially in a group like this, a kind of hang-dog air. Just getting down below eyelevel with the plant and shooting slightly up transforms the flower.<\/p>\n

I had to adjust the color balance in Lightroom to keep it true to the understroy light. Recovery for the background highlights, and a bit of fill light for the foreground. Added Clarity and Vibrance, slid the blackpoint slightly right, and sharpened.<\/p>\n
