\nFebruary 1<\/p>\n

Carol called me out to the kitchen in
\nthe middle of my qi gong this morning.
\nSnow falling and a Brown Creeper had
\nflown into the back deck sliding door.
\nIt lay there in fresh white powder and
\nthe cold a foot out on the deck. I ran
\nfor a shoe box, thinking I would bring
\nit in so it did not freeze before it could
\nrecover. So tiny the beak, like a delicate
\nnut pick, or a dentist\u2019s tool, so intricate
\nthe brown and white, black edged pattern
\nof the feathers. I opened the deck door,
\nstill in my tee shirt and shorts, and a pair
\nof winter, fur-lined crocs, and stepped
\nout. As soon as I bent to pick up the bird
\nit came up off its side and onto its feet,
\nand the eye popped open. It shuffled
\nan inch or so forward, so I knew it was
\nalright. I went for my camera then and
\ngot a few shots of it while it rested there.
\nIt didn\u2019t fly off, so I thought maybe it still
\nneeded some warmth and bent again to pick
\nit up. My hand was an inch from it, and I
\nwas thinking of how banders handle birds,
\ngetting myself ready, when it it found its
\nwings and sailed up over the deck rail and
\naway to the maples at the edge of the yard.
\nI am sure the bird did not appreciate the
\nencounter with the glass, but I certainly
\nappreciated my encounter with the Creeper.
\nI returned to my exercise uncommonly
\nenergized, full of positive qi, ready to
\nwork it through my body and the day.<\/p>\n
