<\/a>Wild Turkey, Laudholm Farms, Wells Maine<\/p><\/div>
\nYesterday\u2019s Day Poem was about my encounter with the Wild Turkeys at Laudholm Farm.<\/p>\n
Turkey day today…down the lane
\nat Laudholm, a whole gaggle, hens
\nand this years young, long past
\npoults, almost as big as their mothers.
\nI rode my ebike down to them, and
\nstopped about 30 feet from the flock,
\ngot off, flipped the kickstand down
\nand parked…got my camera out…
\nand still they dottled along the edge
\nof the road, picking up grain of
\nsome kind, or maybe bugs, in the
\nshort grass. But I knew already
\nthat turkeys have tiny brains…a
\ncar came by and spooked one, so
\nit ran across the road to my side,
\nending up 10 feet in front of me.
\nI took another step and it fluttered
\nits wings in a half-hearted attempt
\nat flight and scuttled back across
\nthe road, running, head well out
\nand its legs pumping trying to
\ncatch up. I though it might fall on
\nits face in the middle of the road.
\nTiny brains, and certainly some
\nwhat primative…and yet, despite
\ntheir tasty breasts and drumsticks,
\nthey manage to survive, and are
\nincreasing in numbers all over North
\nAmerica. They must have some kind
\nof secret strategy I am not aware of…
\nsome turkey smarts that defies logic.<\/p>\n
