White-tailed Deer, Laudholm Farms, Wells Maine<\/p><\/div>You will need to look carefully or you might think this is just a shot of standing cattail reeds. Can you see the subject of interest. There is a White-tailed Deer standing in the reeds. A tricky focus problem…but Sony’s Direct Manual Focus handled it. <\/p>\n

The poem:<\/p>\n

As I stood on the Marsh View 
\ndeck at Laudholm Farms, 
\nlistening to a Marsh Wren sing 
\nand looking for the source, 
\nI saw movement through the 
\ncattail reeds, maybe 30 yards 
\nout. Something big and mammal 
\nlike. It took me a long moment 
\nof looking before my eyes, 
\nbefore my brain, could sort the 
\nshapes and assemble them, 
\npuzzle like, through the reeds. 
\nYes two big ears, and a long 
\nnose, and a body almost completely 
\nscreened, but there. A White Tailed 
\nDeer. She stood and looked at me, 
\nprobably more certain of what 
\nI was than I was of her. I raised the 
\ncamera and focused manually to 
\nsee if I could capture the magic 
\nof the moment…and then, greedy,
\nshifted just to my left to try for 
\na better line of sight, and she was 
\noff, bounding high, white flag 
\nfollowing, splashing through the 
\nwater and the reeds toward the 
\nsafety of the wooded shore.<\/p>\n
