Eastern Towhee, Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, Wells Maine<\/p><\/div>I wrote a poem about this encounter at Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve at Laudholm Farms in Wells Maine. <\/p>\n

I took a walk in the woods and fields
\nat Laudholm Farms today. Sunday.
\nOur last sunny day for most of a week,
\nor so the weather says. It seemed the
\nthe whole world was celebrating. Great
\nclouds (courtesy of the coming storms)
\nover a luminous landscape…spring going
\nstrong toward summer. In a newly
\ndry vernal pool a Towhee dug deep
\nin the damp leaves with impossible 
\nflicks of feet…cachunk…and leaves flying,
\nchchunk and a small crater opening under,
\npure percussion all out of proportion to the
\nsize of the bird…a Chipmunk followed
\npicking up the acorns uncovered, and
\na Titmouse came in after, looking
\nfor what the Towhee passed up: the 
\nnot a beatle, not a cricket, too small
\na grub, denizens of the leaf litter (since
\nthe Towhee ate all those). I thought it
\nvery clever of the Chipmunk and the
\nTitmouse to let the Towhee do the work.
\nBut honestly, the Towhee looked like he 
\nwas enjoying making the mess…and I suppose 
\nthat is adequate compensation, on a sunny
\nSunday, when all the world is celebrating.<\/p>\n
