I told the story of these Trout Lilies at Emmon’s Preserve (Kennebunkport Conservation Trust) in a Day Poem a few days ago. They are also sometimes called Adder’s Tongue <\/p>\n

I went to Emmon’s Preserve today
\nto look for Trout Lilies where I know
\nthey grow, along the trail down to the
\nlittle falls on the Bascom River. As
\nI went down, I thought for sure I was
\ntoo late…the blossoms were closed,
\nwell past and drying, and the leaves
\nalready loosing the spots that give
\nthe flower it’s names, whether you
\ncall it Trout Lily or Adder’s Tongue.
\nAh well, I have missed them before
\nand I would like to think this will
\nnot be my last spring…but then
\nright down by the falls, where the
\ncold air settles and is further cooled
\nby the rushing water, holding back the
\nseason, there they were…in full bloom,
\npoking up out of moss right by the water’s
\nedge…nodding as they do…bending their
\nbright yellow faces down until the red veins
\non the backs of the petals show like a
\nblush. I bent low to photograph them,
\ndoing my best not to slip off the bank and
\ninto the the stream. The woods dream
\nin flowers in the spring. I would not
\nwant to wake them with my thrashing.<\/p>\n
